‘Stance’ is one of our five primary ‘Set-Up Components’. Being a ‘555 Golf Family Member’, you shall be familiar with ‘Posture, Grip, Stance, Ball Location and Alignment’.
I just read a seven page dissertation on ‘Stance’ … enough to cause a Ph.D migraine! Adequate time interval to eat bacon and eggs with toast or to take a restless nap!
‘Stance’ is about our ‘Lower Body Machine’ (LBM) … Feet, Ankles, Lower Limbs, Knees, Upper Limbs, which are comprised of Thighs and Hips. Our ‘Biggest Workhorse Muscles’ reside in this aspect. (see ‘Quads, Glutes, Hamstrings and Gastrocs’)
There are two fundamental aspects we need to consider in this topic of ‘Stance’ … 1) Target and Brace Foot Width and 2) Target and Brace Foot Aim. This ‘Foot Aim’ is often overlooked or misunderstood. We need to fix that negligence. It often comes with a substantial cost!
WIDTH: Think about the ‘Set-Up Configuration’ of a baseball short stop. We refer to this as ‘Athletic Ready Address’. (not a bad example) Our ankles should be slightly wider than our ‘Hip Sockets’. How can we test and prove our efficiency? Get a golf buddy to push us gently Target and Brace side. We should be able to feel strong and resistive to ‘Lateral Yield’. (Sway & Slide) Also, get your buddy to push you ‘Aft’ (Front to Back) and forward (Back to Front). You should be both resistive and stable herein as well. (see ‘Vertical Axis & Pivot Stability’)
AIM: Brace Foot Square to the Target Line. (Power & Authority Position – Thrust). Target Foot must ‘Steer So Your Hips or Pivot Engine Can Clear’. Target foot open how much? More than you might expect … 45 to 60 degrees. This ‘Target Foot Aim’ should invite ‘Pivot Release’. How can one test this ‘Target Foot Aim’? Do your ‘555 Slap Your Hand Bullet-Proof Drill’. Target Hand hanging with the ‘Brace Hand Pivot Slapping or Hitting’. Interestingly, this ‘Firm Slap’ will be enough to cause your Hips (Pivot Tension) to release or unload to atop of your Target Femur! Your Brace Foot will have transitioned around and up onto its toes. You shall be able to do this drill in comfort! Proof is found in ‘Tapping Your Brace Toe On The Ground’.
