How many of us ‘Work Smart’ to a consciously improving practice and play result? Fewer than might be imagined? Here is a helpful and novel idea, if you have a moment and the desire.
The majority of driving ranges and practice facilities are on a golf course. If you do not have their score card, get one from the pro-shop. Warm up dedicated to ‘Putting and Chipping’. When ready shift to the driving range. Make a few ‘Full Swings’.
Novel idea? Practise with the score card! Let’s keep this simple? The first hole is a 252 yard Executive Par 4. We are NOT going for the green! Do The Math! Consider ‘The Pitching Wedge Rule’! Let us assume that your #PW is a comfortable average 125 yard ‘One Hop Stopper’. How do we play this Par 4? #PW, #PW and a Putt.
What if it is a longer Par 4 requiring a #9 (140) and #PW (125) making it a total of 165 yards? Even slightly longer might involve #8 (155) and #PW (125) totaling 280 yards. This 280 yard Par 4 first hole from the ‘Driving Range’ teeing deck will now involve a well-struck #8 Iron and a #PW.
If we hit one of these two strikes poorly, imagine having to ‘Chip or Bump & Run’ the next shot, Pull your appropriate club and execute that strike from the Driving Range Teeing Deck to you ‘12 inch Landing Circle’. You get the picture! Practise making 9 or 18 holes.
A ‘Whole-istic’ 530 yard Par 5 might play out like this … First club is Driver executed to 250 yards. 530 – 250 = 280. Next abide by your ‘Pitching Wedge Rule’. 280 – 125 = 155. Thus, you might get onto the Dance Floor using #8 and #PW. Pretend that you missed the green? Play a ‘Chip or Bump & Run’ for your next Driving range practice shot. Again, if you are determined, play the ‘Front 9 and or the Back 9’ in the above ‘Work Smart’ manner? You may have enough fun to play 18?
Practise smart!
