a great ‘Putting Eval Skill’ activity
A key component to making any successful ‘Putt’ is to accomplish our ‘Initial Ball Rolling Line’ (IBRL’) or ‘Start Line’. How to set-up your ‘Practice Station’?
Do this exercise on as flat and smooth of a surface as available. Located the cup. Pace back or measure 10 feet and stick a tee in the ground. (your 555 Team all carry a ‘Chalk Line’. Snap one on the grass!) The ‘Gate’ needs to be 12 inches closer to the hole or in front of the ball. To make ‘The Gate’, stick two tees in the ground 2.25 inches apart with the ‘Chalk Line’ in their middle. The golf ball is a nominal 1.5 inches in diameter. Thus, you have a .75” total margin of error at 12 inches … half on each side.
Make ten ‘Evaluation Putts’ with 11 feet of delivery energy (no coming up short). If you do not make contact with either tee, “Well Done!” If you hit 5 ‘Left Side Tees’, you have a ‘Left Side Tendency or Bias’. (see ‘Dispersion’) One must determine the ‘Error Root Cause’. It should NOT be ‘Station Set-Up’ oriented as you did that task perfectly! Knowing this we need to evaluate 1) Our Foot Alignment (Railway Track), 2) Our Shoulder Alignment, 3) Our Grip (Clubface Aim), 4) Our Hand Path … are we ‘Pushing or Pulling’ and 5) Our Posture. (eyeline)
Of interest, if we miss the ‘10 Footer’ by 1 foot, we have a ‘10% Dispersion Error’. One must ‘Qualify and Quantify’ results if improvement is expected! All misses are usually procedural or control errors. They are both directly and actively ‘Observable and Fixable’!
What is always an underlying truth about these ‘Putting & Chipping Procedures’? “ALL PUTTS ARE DEAD STRAIGHT!” Is this not an amazing fact? You only have to learn or master ‘One Procedural Aspect’ … straight!
Important perspective? Are you ‘Steering & Clearing’ your ‘Target Elbow? If you have your ‘Target Elbow’ pressed against your ‘Target Abdomen’, going ‘Target Side’ (Pulling) may be your tendency. Small details matter!
