I recently read that there are ‘Three Chips Around The Green’! Suppose you might define that ‘Procedure’ to that degree? A golfer who can ‘Putt’ can also ‘Chip’! Some of my students disagree but not for long! You can use the same ‘8 Step Pre-Shot Routine’. Good place to start!
Let’s try this simplicity?
“A Chip Is A Putt With A Hop” (more ‘Ground Time than Air Time’) … just one pretty simple ‘Stroke Procedure’ from the first cut or ‘Fringe’. It is sometimes referred to as the ‘Light Rough’. For me I prefer to think of the ‘Second Cut’ as the ‘Light Rough’.
To control the ‘Hop’ all you have to do is make an appropriate ‘Club Selection’! More ‘Loft’ produces more ‘Hop’. It is very good advice to ‘Get The Ball Back On The Ground And Acting Like A Putt As Quickly As Possible’.
When you add much ‘Trajectory’ you have stopped making a ‘Chip’ and are making a ‘Pitch’ (more ‘Air Time than Ground Time’)!
Other things to consider are
Your 5 Set-Ups (Posture, Grip, Stance, Ball Location & Alignment),
The ‘Lie’ … Up-Hill, Side Hill and Down Hill,
Grass length and its direction (with or against your stroke. May be sand or detritus – pine needles or straw),
The Moisture,
Pureness of Impact,
Squareness of Clubface Aim,
Path and
Bounce.
One ‘Chipping’ weakness you do not want to suffer from is a case of the ‘Fat – Thins’ (Chunky – Topped). It’s nick-name is ‘Purgatory’! (see ‘Chili-Dips’ and ‘Shanks’!)
