We golf teachers hear the question regularly, “What the heck is that?” A lot of good global residents have never ‘Skipped Rocks’ on a glassy pond or quietly flowing wide spot on a meandering creek. Using a fairly flat Frisbee shaped rock helps. Out of round rocks tend to make one ungainly splash and sink to the bottom. That does not qualify as a ‘Skip’! Experts can create 12 to 15 skips! That is a solid athletic accomplishment demanding speed and solid mechanics!
Without question, the sidearm to underhand baseball throw tends to be most successful. This produces a shallow or low-flying ‘Angle Of Attack’ and thus that skip. “Time For A Feel!”
Pay particular attention as to your mechanics in slow motion at first. Increase your delivery velocity after about 5 ‘Slow Motion Reps’. You shall soon discover that your ‘Lower Body Machine’ (LBM) leads while your ‘Upper Body Machine’ (UBM) lags. (see ‘Bull-Whipping’) Your ‘Target Foot’ leads or steps into the delivery, somewhat like throwing a bowling ball. The softball underhanded pitch is a good example too.
When we think of ‘Shaft and Swing Plane’ in golf, our Lever Assemblies’ (especially the Brace Side) tend to be early into the bottom half of the swing circle and through the ‘Impact & Separation Zone’.
As you perfect the Baseball, Bowling and ‘Skipping Rocks’ varieties, shift your focus to having a mid to shortish iron in your brace hand. Make 5 repetitions paying attention to ‘Components & Procedures’. (positions and feels) Next, place your Target Hand on the golfclub grip and repeat 5 reps.
Here we go … ‘The Moment Of Truth’! Both hands properly on striking a slightly teed up ball utilizing the ‘Skipping Technique’ … stepping in and feel ‘Down, Out, Forward & Through Impact’.
If we start this ‘DOFT’ trip with our hands too high, we shall tend to get above the ‘Impact Fix Set-Up Plane’ and not like our ‘Ball Flight Outcome’.
Proud and appreciative of your participation and diligence.
