One can Chip with virtually every club in his or her bag except the Driver and Putter. These clubs provide or present very little factory ‘Loft’ to the ball. Why? Because they only have a little. (Driver 8 to 12 … Putter 1 to 5)
Remember, putts have virtually all ‘Ground Time’ (roll) while your ‘Chipping Tools’, with more ‘Loft’, produce more ‘Flight or Air Time’.
Our ‘5 Set-Ups’ are a wonderful advantage for all golf strike procedures. Let us take a quick, progressive and simplistic look at Chipping?
1. Posture … proper Forward Inclination and Lateral Tilts (Target & Brace)
2. Grip … fairly neutral and similar to ‘Putting’ (lots of variety)
3. Stance … relatively narrow with the ‘Target Foot Flared’ so as to especially ‘Release The Target Hip’ behind the ‘Hip Axis’. With the Target Hip Stuck or blocked you invite a Brace Hand Over The Top – Pull Outcome – Outside In Path
4. Ball Location … a little aft to invite a ‘Descending Blow’ – Inside Out Path
5. Alignment … slightly ‘Open’ to precipitate hip release or ‘Pivot Action’.
Use Hips For Chips’!
You want to avoid ‘Flip Action With Your Neutral Chipping’ as there can be very little ‘Clubface Control’ with a ‘Flippy’ error. ‘Chipping & Putting’ demand precision! If you are ‘Properly Set-Up’, you shall find yourself Chipping with that wonderful ‘Hip Action’.
It is useful to establish your ‘Intermediate Target’ as this point 15 inches in front of the Ball Location invites ‘Chase, Follow & Finish’ and Release Line Control. As the ‘Pull’ is a dominant tendency, perhaps employ a little ‘Push Push Path’? See ‘Outside In Path’ as a stroke error.
Keep your ‘Ocular Acuity’ and proper ‘Athletic Breathing’ energized! The better you see the ball, the more acutely you shall strike and deliver the ‘Sweet Spot’ or ‘Center Of Mass’ (COM). (Impact Point – Bottom Inside Cheek or BIC)
